Second Eleven Umpires 2011

As you were informed previously, the League decided that the practice of appointing only one umpire in an increasing number of 2nd eleven matches was having a severe detrimental effect not only on the recruitment of new umpires but the retention of existing officials. Therefore, from the beginning of next season we will initially appoint two umpires to every game.

Early indications are that we will only have sufficient numbers to cover between 25 to 33 per cent of 2nd eleven matches. Clubs MUST therefore make alternative arrangements to provide umpires when the League cannot.

The following criteria have been approved by the Executive Board.

• Appointments will be made in three blocks – first 9 games, second nine games and the last four games.

• Each Club will receive a copy of the appointments.

• Alterations to the appointments are inevitable due to cry-offs etc. These will be notified to Clubs as soon as possible. If a cry-off occurs before the Wednesday night preceding the game then that umpire will be replaced, if a replacement is available. After Wednesday he will not be replaced by moving one from another game. Wherever possible Clubs will be kept informed even as late as Saturday morning.

• A commitment was previously made to give those Clubs that provided umpires to have precedence. For a variety of reasons this is not possible.

• Umpires will be appointed to the WHOLE LEAGUE on a rotation basis. i.e. Each week the fixtures will be numbered 1 to 24. If umpires are appointed to matches 1 – 9 then the following week appointments will start at match 10. This is the only way we can ensure that all Clubs are treated equally.
• Whilst the League wishes to leave the payment of expenses to “Club Umpires” to individual Clubs it does expect that they are afforded the same respect and treatment as League Umpires.

I have taken this opportunity of contacting all Clubs as it is felt that the true impact of this policy for next year may not have been universally understood.

Keith Healey is undertaking introductory courses at present and I am sure he will be willing to meet any further requests. There has been one such course already, which was poorly attended, only 3 clubs being represented. There will be two more: one at Hem Heath CC on Thursday 9th December (7.30 p.m.) and the second on Sunday morning 12th December (10 a.m.) at Cheadle CC

Keith may be contacted in two ways: telephone number is 01782 850701 or you can contact him by email at: k.healey@staffordshirecricket.co.uk

If there is sufficient interest, it may be possible to run a further level-1 course in the spring. This course covers significantly more than the introductory course.

The above is the framework for next year but I understand that adjustments may be necessary. Although I am out of the country until the end of February, I am contactable via e mail: tedtill@talktalk.net.

Crash Courses in Umpiring

»Posted by on Nov 8, 2010 in Umpires & Scorers Info | 0 comments

As indicated at the pre-AGM League meeting of 7th October 2010, the practice of appointing just one umpire to second XI matches is to be terminated. As a result of this decision, it is inevitable that there will be a significant number of occasions next season when some second XI matches will have NO UMPIRES APPOINTED.

Consequently, there will be a need for clubs to have someone available to stand in as emergency umpires in the 2011 season – and possibly beyond. With this in mind, the League has arranged to hold a short presentation on basic umpiring. This should take a couple of hours at most. It is hoped that each club in the League will send at least one person to one or other of the presentations.

It is inevitable that some interested parties may not be able to attend on the date of the presentation. To minimize this problem, the presentation will be given on three separate occasions, in differing locations and times. The first showing will be at:

BURSLEM C.C. on WEDNESDAY 17th NOVEMBER at 7.30pm
(this is the evening before the A.G.M.)

This location has been selected as the first one due to the large size of the meeting room. Accordingly, it is hoped that most clubs will be able to send someone to this venue. There will be two more showings.

The second showing will be at:

HEM HEATH C.C. on THURSDAY 9th DECEMBER at 7.30pm

The third occasion will be at:

CHEADLE C.C on SUNDAY MORNING, 12th DECEMBER at 10am

Free handouts/notes will be issued at each presentation.
